# Your first menu

This tutorial creates a basic menu with a title and a button. Right-clicking the button sends a chat message to the player.

The example works on Paper, Folia, Leaf and Spigot. It requires no resource pack or additional plugins.

## Prerequisites

Complete [Installation](/arcmenu-wiki/getting-started/install.md) and confirm that the bundled example menu opens. Validation and reload commands require OP status or `arcmenu.admin`.

This tutorial adds a menu without replacing the bundled examples or changing the main-menu setting.

## Create the menu file

Create `welcome.yml` in the directory for your server:

| Server                                    | File path                                  |
| ----------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------ |
| Paper, Folia, Leaf and compatible servers | `plugins/ArcMenu/menus/welcome.yml` |
| Spigot                                    | `plugins/ArcMenu/spigot/menus/welcome.yml` |

Save the following complete configuration in the file:

```yaml
schema-version: 1
id: welcome
permission: arcmenu.use
canvas:
  width: 320
  height: 180
  pixels-per-block: 42.7
  distance: 3
frontend:
  background:
    type: rectangle
    width: 140
    height: 80
    color: '#182031'
    opacity: 235
  title:
    type: text
    content: '&fWelcome'
    offset: {y: 24, z: 1}
    size: 5
  description:
    type: text
    content: '&7Right-click the button below.'
    offset: {y: 4, z: 1}
    size: 3
  greeting-button:
    type: rectangle
    width: 60
    height: 18
    color: '#365E91'
    offset: {y: -20, z: 1}
  greeting-label:
    type: text
    content: '&fSay hello'
    offset: {y: -20, z: 2}
    size: 4
backend:
  greeting-area:
    x: 0
    y: -20
    width: 60
    height: 18
    actions:
      right:
        - 'tell: &aWelcome to the server!'
```

{% hint style="info" %}
Use spaces for YAML indentation, not tabs. Preserve indentation and quotation marks when copying the configuration, and ensure the file extension is `.yml`.
{% endhint %}

## Validate and load the menu

After saving the file, run:

```
/arcmenu validate
/arcmenu reload
```

If an error is reported, check the indicated file and field, correct it and retry. After a successful reload, open the menu with:

```
/arcmenu open welcome
```

`welcome` in the command corresponds to the configuration's `id`.

## Verify the menu

1. Confirm that the title, description and button are visible.
2. On Paper, Folia, Leaf and compatible servers using touch mode, point at the button with your view. On Spigot, use the crosshair.
3. Right-click the button and confirm that the welcome message appears in chat.
4. Run `/arcmenu close` to close the menu.

Players on Paper-based servers must be on the ground before opening a menu. The default touch mode is sufficient for this tutorial; Spigot requires no mode change.

## Simple changes

Change `content` under `frontend` → `title` to edit the menu title, or edit the message after `tell:` in the button action to change its response. Preserve the existing indentation and quotation marks.

Save the file, run `/arcmenu reload`, reopen the menu and check the result.

## Next step

Continue with [Configuration files](/arcmenu-wiki/configuration-and-administration/configuration-files.md) for an overview of the settings and how to apply changes. Top-level menu fields are covered in [Menu document structure](/arcmenu-wiki/menu-configuration/menus.md).
